Who We Are
History of The Orwell Hotel Felixstowe
The Orwell Hotel, established in 1898, is one of Felixstowe’s most iconic landmarks, with a rich history that reflects the town’s development as a popular seaside destination. Designed by John Shewell Corder, a well-known architect, the hotel was built to accommodate the increasing number of visitors arriving in Felixstowe following the completion of the railway link to the East Suffolk line at Westerfield. Its strategic location near the railway station made it a preferred choice for travelers and holidaymakers seeking comfort and convenience.

Early Ownership, Development, and Expansion
The hotel was originally owned by the Tollemache brewing family, who were influential in Felixstowe’s early growth as a fashionable resort. Under their ownership, the hotel gained prominence for its elegant Victorian architecture, spacious rooms, and refined hospitality. During this period, Felixstowe emerged as a popular coastal retreat, attracting both British and international visitors.
In 1974, The Orwell Hotel became part of the Queens Moat House group, a major hotel chain. This transition marked a period of significant renovation and expansion, enhancing the hotel’s facilities while preserving its historic charm. The hotel’s reputation for hosting high-profile events and providing luxury accommodations grew during this time.

The Orwell Hotel remains a cornerstone of Felixstowe’s hospitality scene, attracting guests for both leisure and business. Its proximity to Felixstowe Beach adds to its appeal, allowing guests to enjoy the town’s coastal charm, scenic views, and refreshing sea breeze.
